Our van – Mobi

Our van is a 22ft (6.71m) Elite Luxury 2200  and we love it.

We honed in on Elite because they had a reputation for quality, having won the 2013 and 2015 Caravan Manufacturer fo the Year award from the Caravan Industry Association Victoria (CTIAV).

Elite had also been selected as the caravan manufacturer for the Discovery Channel series “How do they do It” – how to make caravans.

We had told Elite that we did not need the van until end January 2018, but they advised us to go for December so as to beat the Christmas/New Year period and because the factory was moving early in the new year.

In September we flew to Melbourne to do a tour of the factory and were quite impressed with what we saw – from chassis to final product. We particularly liked the quality review process where each van gets 3 inspections by different people. The first inspection lists faults found. A second person does an assessment and may find additional issues. Then there is a third inspection.

We also very much like the design of the 2200 series, especially the club lounge – Kerry did not want a dinette seating arrangement. The floorplan is very similar to this:

Changes we have made to this standard layout include:

  • changing the angled bench in the kitchen – squaring that up – and moving the sink so the the draining board is over the washing machine
  • installing 2 pull our benches one on either side of the kitchen
  • installing a 32 inch TV on the kitchen wall on the shower side (a show special when we bought the van).

Other changes to the van included:

  • swapping the standard microwave and oven for a convection microwave
  • an extra solar panel
  • a slide out BBQ
  • a 4G aerial
  • a Dexter anti-sway unit
  • a pressure hatch (to keep dust out)
  • a DO35 articulated hitch
  • 2 jerry can holders

We also changed some of the standard van design, added some things to the construction  process, and bought quite a few bits of gear and gadgets for Mobi.  The main ones are as follows.

  1. I’ll be very interested in how many of your addons actually get used.
Have a great trip. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did in 1990. 25000 km of joy over 10 months.
